1985 witnessed the inauguration of Rajiv Gandhi University Itanagar, formerly known as Arunachal University in Rono Hills. RGU was converted as a Central University in 2007. Currently there are 7 degree colleges affiliated with RGU. At present, Prof. Tamo Mibang is the Vice Chancellor of RGU.

RGU Itanagar offers Graduation and Post-Graduation courses in various fields. Some of them are Basic Sciences, Commerce & Management, Education, Engineering & Technology, Environmental Sciences, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Languages and Social Sciences. Apart from the basic courses.
